The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare Summary
This week I have read the play, The Taming of the Shrew. This is a romantic Shakespeare play about a father, Baptista, who is trying to find suitors for his two beautiful daughters. That may sound easy, but when Baptista’s rule comes into picture, things get a little difficult for the suitors of the younger daughter.
As I said, Baptista is trying to find suitors for his daughters. He has two of them. The younger daughter, Bianca, is a beautiful, kind, young lady, who many men are in love with. On the other hand, Katherina, the older daughter, is a shrew. She is rude to almost everyone and no man would ever love her. This is not good for Bianca or any of her suitors because Baptista’s rule is that Bianca can’t get married until Katherina does.
Lucentio is a man who is in love with Bianca; and therefore, he is very upset when he finds out about her father’s rule. Everyone knows that no one will ever marry Katherina, so Lucentio must work out a plan.
He finds a man named Petruchio and tells him that Lucentio will pay him if he marries Katherina. Lucentio knows that no one could ever truly love Kate, so he even adds that Petruchio can divorce her afterwards. After all, all Lucentio needed was Katherina to get married so that he could marry Bianca. It did not matter how long she was married. Eventually, after lots of persuasion, Petruchio finally gave in and made the deal.
The rest of the story basically evolves around Petruchio trying to get Katherina to marry him, but she will not. Of course Lucentio is always at his back trying to push him on so that he could marry Bianca. Petruchio goes through so much trying to get Katherina to love him, including singing a song to her!
Throughout this time, Katherina and Petruchio start to actually fall in love with each other. Eventually, they both give in and actually get married. This happily ends this story.
Of course, much more happens in The Taming of the Shrew. It is a funny, romantic book and play that I think everyone should read. I figure you will just have to figure it out for yourself, and see what I mean about this being a very good book.
