Backpacking
This week I learned about sharp things that are necessary for backpacking. They were multipurpose tools, knives, and axes. I will explain why each of these are important and which ones you should buy for backpacking.
The multipurpose tool is a foldable tool that usually has pliers, a screwdriver, scissors, a knife, and other helpful tools. These can come in many different sizes, colors, and quality. I’d suggest one that is comfortable on your hand, folds and opens easily, and has good quality and working tools. LEATHERMAN is a good company used to buy these tools. You can use this tool with many different scenarios. It is convenient and can easily fit in a pocket, purse, or bag. It is helpful even if you are not on a backpacking trip.
Another essential backpacking tool is a knife. There are many different kinds of knives, and they can help with many needs. You will want to use a sharp knife with a leather or strong rubber handle. Try to find one that is affordable and fits your needs. Do not try to shave some bark off of a tree with a fancy, expensive, collectors knife. That is not only not going to work, but it is also dangerous.
Finally, an ax is something you should have on a backpacking trip. It is not essential, and will take up space, but it is extremely helpful for chopping firewood. A good ax will be long, sharp, and stiff. Make sure to always cut downward, and put logs and other things in between you and your project, in case you miss. Remember to always be careful. Sharp axes may seem more dangerous, but they will hit and go directly into the wood. A dull ax will slip off the wood and hit you or someone else.
Having a tool is important, but not knowing how or when to use the tool makes the tool completely useless. It is also necessary to have good quality tools. You should always be prepared and have the right tool for the job, and make sure it fits your budget, needs, and is of good quality.
